Building Chords

This section is a very handy one.
This section will teach you how to build Chords - It's very easy.

Let's Get Started!!

First, let's take a look at the C Scale

C D E F G A B

Assign each Letter a Number -

C - 1
D - 2
E - 3
F - 4
G - 5
A - 6
B - 7
C - 8
D - 9
E - 10
F - 11
G - 12

Remember - The Formula for Major is 1  3  5
                                                            C  E  G

-----------------
-----------------
----0------G----
----2------E----
----3------C----
-----------------

Then add the Octaves to create the C Major Chord - If you want -

               ----0------E----    Octave
                ----1------C----    Octave
----0------G----
----2------E----
----3------C----
-----------------

When you're building a Chord Scale
Remember to build them as the Scale is

C       D       E       F       G       A       B
Maj    min    min    Maj    Maj    min    dim

The Formula for Major is 1  3  5
                                        C  E  G

The Formula for Minor is 1  b3  5
                                         D  F  A

Now we have to get into just a little bit of Theory just for a moment
Then we'll get back to Building Chords again.

1 Fret = one Half Step

Take a look at your Guitar
Now take a look at the distance between C and E
That is a Major 3rd ---> 4 Half Steps

--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
--------3-------7---------
--------------------------
C          E

Now take a look at the distance between D and F
That is a Minor 3rd ---> 3 Half Steps

--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
--------5-------8---------
--------------------------
D          F

**Tip #1**
Chords are built on 3rd's of the Scale
The C Major Chord is a Major 3rd and a Minor 3rd

Example

--------------------------
--------------------------
------------------0-------
-----2------------2-------
-----3--------------------
--------------------------
Maj 3rd         min 3rd

**Tip #2**
To make things easior without having to know all the Theory
Just take any 3rd Note of the Scale

Example

C  E  G

D  F  A

E  G  B

F  A  C

G  B  D

A  C  E

B  D  F

Remember to add the Octaves to make the full Chord

Also, the Notes don't always have to be in the exact order, just as long as they are there.
Remember - Music is a form of expression
If it sounds good - Play it!

Here are some examples of the full Chords to give you a better idea of how they are built

---3----G---
---5----E---
---5----C---
---5----G---
---3----C---
-------------

C Maj

---5----A---
---6----F---
---7----D---
---7----A---
---5----D---
-------------

D min

---7----B---
---8----G---
---9----E---
---9----B---
---7----E---
-------------

E min

---8----C---
--10----A---
--10----F---
--10----C---
---8----F---
-------------

F Maj

--10----D---
--12----B---
--12----G---
--12----D---
--10----G---
-------------

G Maj

Sus Chords

The formula:

C sus 4 or C Suspended Forth
1  4  5
C  F  G
You just remove the 3rd and add the 4th

Example:

-----0-----E-----
-----1-----C-----
-----0-----G-----
-----3-----F-----
-----3-----C-----
------------------

C sus 2 or C Suspended Second
1  2  5
C  D  G
You just remove the 3rd and add the 2nd

Example:

-----3-----G-----
-----3-----D-----
-----5-----C-----
-----5-----G-----
-----3-----C-----
------------------

Now let's take a look at the C add 9 Chord

The Formula:

1  3  5  9

Add Chords are different then sus Chords because you're not removing anything
You're adding to it!

Remember there is exceptions to every rule
This is just the basics.

C - 1
D - 2
E - 3
F - 4
G - 5
A - 6
B - 7
C - 8
D - 9
E - 10
F - 11
G - 12

Count the letters to 9 and add it to the C Major Chord

Example:

------0-------------0------
------1-------------3------
------0-------------0------
------2-------------2------
------3-------------3------
----------------------------
          C Maj           C add 9 (C 9)

Here are some more Chords:
